Glass Balustrades: Where Most Projects Go Wrong (and How to Get Them Right)

Glass balustrades look simple—but they rarely are.

Behind every clean, frameless finish is a system that has to handle structural loads, environmental exposure and long-term use. Where projects typically go wrong is assuming the glass does most of the work. In reality, the performance of a balustrade is heavily dependent on the fixing system.

Base channels, spigots and side-mounted brackets all behave differently under load. Choosing the wrong system—or a low-grade version—can lead to:

  • Panel movement over time

  • Visible misalignment

  • Increased stress on glass edges

  • Premature failure in external environments

Another common issue is poor consideration of drainage and weather exposure. External balustrades need fittings that resist corrosion and allow for water management. Without this, even high-end installations can degrade quickly.

A well-designed balustrade system isn’t just about aestheticsIt’s about matching the fixing method to the environment, load requirements and installation conditions.
